Gone Cardboard News: Top Race x2

Wolfgang Kramer has polished off a number of old games for new editions in recent years including Tycoon (as El Capitan) and City (as Der Markt von Alturien). His latest game to be revived and rebuffed? Top Race, which is being published in French and English by Canadian publisher Magma Éditions and in German by Pegasus Spiele. In Top Race, as in other Kramer designs such as Daytona 500 and Detroit-Cleveland Grand Prix, players compete to earn the most money in auto races by buying ownership of cars and racing for prize money – but the cards used to move cars around the track often move the opponents’ cars, too, creating challenges of what to play when for the best effect.

Strangely, while both editions will be redesigned in both cars and cards and include new variants from Kramer, they won’t be identical. Says Magma’s Marc Beaudoin, “We’re not working with [Pegasus] on this one. They decided to go on by themselves, so it’s a case of simultaneous development.” Pegasus’ version is due out in September, while Magma’s version – to be distributed only in Canada at this time – has an autumn release date. So before players get to race, the publishers get to hold a speed contest of their own first!

This game has been added to Gone Cardboard.

I’m curious to what circuits will be included, and will the new game be totally compatible with the former?  It would be great if this begins a future distribution of additional circuits as expansions!  I’ve waited a looong time for them.

Hi Ray!

I’m the “president” of Volkanik, co-publishing the French/English version of Top Race with Magma Edition.

I just wanted you to know that there will be additional circuit and expansions. I can’t give you specific date yet, but for more upcoming information, you can also check our website who just open yesterday: http://www.volkanik.ca. In our edition, the game will only come with the original track, but it will also include 7 variants design by M. Kramer and 2 quick one, from our own.

Yes, the extra tracks would be compatible with any previous version, future expansions might include new rules, using new card, that would stand out from previous deck.

I hope I answered your question, if you have any more inquiries, don’t hesitate.

Have a great day!
