Gone Cardboard News: Wiz-War, 8th Edition - More Info from Chessex

Don Reents, publisher of Chessex, has shared a bit of information about Wiz-War, 8th Edition. “The plan now is to have a full demo copy at the GAMA Trade Show [which takes place in late April], and at that point determine how many to publish,” he says. “We plan to go to press in late May or early June and hope to have it out by GenCon.”

The new edition will include double-sided, full-color gameboards. “The expansion sets this time will be card sets,” says Reents. “In the past, we had to create a box just for the boards, and adding the boards doubles the cost of an expansion. Doing a tuckbox for the cards will be inexpensive.”

Artwork for the 8th edition is being handled by Thomas Denmark, who designs and does art for the Dungeoneer ttiles from Atlas Games. (Sample Wiz-War artwork is available on Denmark’s website.) “It’s a much better edition as far as the graphics involved,” says Reents. In addition using to the full-color boards, the cards will be a normal cardstock. “It’s more in the vein of a European production.” Wiz-War will retail around $35-40.

Chessex also plans to reprint Plague & Pestilence at some point in 2007. Reents says that the game play will remain the same, but he plans to add a supplementary booklet about pandemics to provide an educational aspect to the game.

Woo hoo! I’m thrilled to hear that Wiz-War will be back in print after all this time. It still holds up very well as a fun, creative beer and pretzels game.

Now this is great news, my 6th edition sound shabby in comparison.  I wonder how many players, and will the expansions be released at the same time.

Jonathan, I don’t believe the expansions will be released at the same time. All the boards will be included in the base game, which will allow the expansions to be sold for less later. When I don’t know.

As for number of players, I forgot to ask. We’ll find out more at GAMA…
