Gone Cardboard: Railways of the World – Revised Info

In July 2008, FRED Distribution announced that it would split Martin Wallace’s and Glenn Drover’s Railroad Tycoon into two products: Rails of the World – which would contain the components need to play any Rails of… title, such as the Rails of Europe expansion released later in 2008 – and Rails of the Eastern U.S., which would be a new version of the gameboard from Railroad Tycoon that incorporated changes to the system that appeared in Rails of Europe. To give first-time buyers something to play immediately, Rails of the World would include a paper map of Mexico.

At Toy Fair 2009, Rick Soued said that the Rails of… titles would actually appear as Railways of…, as with the recently announced Railways of England and Wales that’s scheduled to debut at Origins in June 2009.

Now Railways of the World has undergone further changes due to feedback from gamers, says FRED’s Keith Blume. The game will now include the mapboard of the Eastern U.S. instead of it appearing as a separate expansion, and the Mexican map will be mounted instead of being paper. The plastic trains will be in six new colors should anyone be lunatic enough to want to play a twelve-player game. Blume had previously announced that the Mexico map would be available separately for anyone who already owns Railroad Tycoon, but no details have been released at this point.

Railways of the World is now scheduled to appear in late June or early July 2009. [Correction: The game is due in August or September. The June/July date applies to other games on FRED’s schedule.] This game has been updated on Gone Cardboard.
