Hexpack – Piecepack Grows New Angles

James Kyle’s piecepack – a generic game system akin to a deck of cards – is a fantastic idea that has spawned dozens of games, both original designs and ports of existing titles. One new development for the system is hexpack, which you can probably tell by the name is a six-sided extension of the piecepack.

“About a year ago, hexpack indeed struck me as a sensible extrapolation of piecepack,” says co-designer Nathan Morse. “I developed it a little bit, but kind of tabled it. Daniel [Wilcox]’s excitement motivated him to work at it some more and get it back onto my mental table.”

A downloadable beta version of their hexpack design is available at hexpack.org. Says Morse, “We both felt that many hexy games could be played on a standard hexpack - especially abstracts – affording people an easy try-before-you-buy mechanism, as well as a solid game design tool. Daniel’s graphical design included snazzy triangular coins, which I thought was a nice touch, and a cool option.” No games are listed on the hexpack.org site, so have at it!
