Info on Zanzibar from Winning Moves Germany

Franz-Benno Delonge has several titles being published in 2007 (Containers, Vexation, the new version of Big City), but Zanzibar has been pretty much a mystery aside from a few lines and a box image around Nuremberg. Well, Winning Moves Germany has finally released more information about Zanzibar on its website, and here’s what we’ve got:

On Zanzibar, the mysterious spice island, spices are traded everywhere. Plantations of pepper, ginger, carnations, cinnamon and vanilla are set up on five provinces. Here large profits can be made. One must only collect enough of the spices in demand or be at the right place in time to make a sale—yet whoever doesn’t fulfill an order well enough must accept sharp losses. Moreover, competition is intense and you can easily be displaced fom a market.

Each player has six agents that are distributed at the start of the game among five different island regions and the sea. Each agent has a different strength and a separate region range (?) and therefore a maximum movement (2-7). Players have ten orders they need to fulfill, and two orders in their hands at all times. Orders might say to occupy a region completely with your agents or to gather, for example, the pepper scattered on the island. To do this, agents are moved over the fields of the island. Whoever fulfills an order discards it, earns money and points on the scoring track, and draws a new order.

Yet crowding on the small spice island of Zanzibar is immense, with many agents working to fulfill orders, so it will come to pass that stronger agents displace weaker ones from neighboring places. The winner is the player who goes farthest on the scoring track.

Zanzibar is for 2-5 players, ages 10 and up, and plays in 45 minutes. No English version is forthcoming at this time.

This looks very interesting, Eric, and I assume it’s available now, since its original release date was March.  I’ll have to look for rules translations.

Good luck, Larry! The Geek lists three owners on the game’s page and is otherwise devoid of information. My contact at Winning Moves Germany says the game was released this week, so we should see more activity soon.
