Larry Levy: It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Well, my computer problems continue.  I wrote the first half of this week’s article at work, emailed it to my home (where I’ve finally restored online access), but the mail seems to have been lost.  A shame, the article featured Pulitzer Prize-type writing.

With the clock ticking, let me quickly say that like many of my fellow BGN brethren, I’m off to the Gathering.  The Gathering is fantastic because it features a solid week of fabulous gaming, but there’s actually a lot more.  There are representatives from all the major German and American publishers there and it’s great rubbing elbows with people so integral to the gaming industry.  Even better are all the well known game designers in attendance.  Regular attendees include Richard Borg, Mike Fitzgerald, Friedemann Friese, Tom Lehmann, Andrea Meyer, Alan Ernstein, and, of course, Alan Moon himself and it’s wonderful talking shop with these folks and maybe trying out a prototype or two.  I’ve also had the pleasure of meeting Bruno Faidutti, Aaron Weissblum, and Joli Kansil there and look forward to talking with Karl-Heinz Schmiel, who’ll be making his first Gathering appearance this week.  Best of all, the guest of honor this year is Mike Siggins!  It’ll be a real kick finally meeting him after reading his great gaming articles all these years.

Another reason this week is so special is the chance to catch up with the many good friends that I only get to see once a year.  Many a fatted calf will come to an untimely end as we visit the local restaurants, chewing the fat about matters both gaming and non.  Every year, I make even more new friends, great representatives of this wonderful hobby.

Unlike Rick, Valerie, and occasionally Patrick, I will make no attempt to post reports from Columbus.  I lack the means, technical savvy, and desire to do so.  So you’ll just have to wait two weeks until your favorite Saturday columnist returns to his post.  But I promise to have lots of facts and opinions about all the new games and a lot of the older ones.  After all, that other most wonderful time of the year is about sharing as well!
