Media Watch: Agricola Goes Mainstream?

From The Kansas City Star:

With the weather turning nippy, it might be time to bust out the board games. Fortunately, lots of new games debuted this year to add to the mix. As a board game geek, I test drove the most interesting ones. Here’s how they played out.

You might interpret that “board game geek” phrase as a hidden message for nestled among Monopoly, Hasbro’s latest adult party game Partini and two Trivial Pursuit games is, of all things, Uwe Rosenberg’s Agricola, which received a grade of A- despite this incorrect and uninspiring opening paragraph from the author:

I had high hopes for this game, the 2008 Spiel de Jahres winner, a special prize for complex games. The first time you play this game, allow yourself a few hours to pore over these rules because they’re definitely intricate, involving an overwhelming number of phases, diagrams and game pieces. I felt annoyed it took so long.

Now that’s perfect for Aunt Paula – sign me up! Head to KansasCity.com to read the entire article.

Best quote from the article: “Agricola is for people who like sophisticated games such as Carcassonne”

Which of course, makes many of us giggle, but it’s interesting that sophisticated=different to this writer.

Nice to see that the writer gave Partini a well-deserved A+.

I live in Kansas City and that Saturday night before this article came out had played Agricola with a new gamer.  I pointed this out to my wife to show her that this is becoming mainstream.  She noted the inclusion of two Trivial Pursuit games (out of the 5 games featured) as pretty sad.  The Carc comment also made me laugh.
