Media Watch: Board game beats new TV as family favorite

From the Kansas City Star:

In a curious turn of events, a $33 board game has been beating a $2,000 high-definition TV in the after-dinner amusement sweepstakes at our house.

For three nights in a row the new 50-inch Sony sat darkened while my husband, our kids (12 and 16) and I vied to set up postal routes in 17th-century Germany. For 60 minutes or so our sole focus was connecting cities, acquiring stagecoaches, placing houses along routes and choosing which officials to tap for favors.

The game that had us so enthralled has an unwieldy name: Thurn and Taxis. It won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (Game of the Year) for 2006. Games that win that prize are typically easy-to-learn strategy games for older kids and adults.

Nice!  It’s certainly true in my house that our kids on average play more boardgames than watching TV.
