Media Watch: Board Games Are Collectible? Who Knew?
From Forbes.com
A Victorian game box surprised the experts in the vintage game market when it sold last week for $8,800, three times the expected price. The 19th century English parlor set went to the highest bidder at Ritchie Auctioneers, a prominent auction house in Toronto.
Filled to the brim with popular Victorian games, the boxed set was presented in pristine, unused condition, which was critical to achieving its high price. Among others, the games inside are chess, backgammon, cribbage, dominoes, playing cards and a variety of dice castors and counters (otherwise known as poker chips).
And the most revealing quote from the article: “Today, flat board games are often collected purely for their visual appeal.” I suppose that could be said about all the games I’ve purchased but not yet played. They sure do look pretty on the shelf. Find out more about antique game collectors at Forbes.com.
