Media Watch: EA, Hasbro Enter Casual Relationship

From IGN.com:

Today Electronic Arts and Hasbro announced a licensing agreement that will see each company creating versions of the other’s games. Under the terms of the deal, EA will have the exclusive worldwide rights to make videogames based on Hasbro’s properties, which include Monopoly, Scrabble, Yahtzee, Nerf, and Tonka. EA plans to make casual games aimed at the mass market for all platforms, PC, handhelds, and mobile phones.

From deeper in the news item: “Our toy and game brands have been family-favorites for decades, and aligning ourselves with EA will result in broadening the reach of our brands through the ‘re-imagining’ of these beloved entertainment icons in all key digital categories,” said Brian Goldner, Hasbro’s Chief Operating Officer.

I’ve seen a lot of marketing speak in my career, but I’m still amazed when I see stilted, inhuman statements like this one, which refers to the “brands” as being family favorites and not the toys and games themselves. Goldner is excited about being able to “[broaden] the reach of our brands...in all key digital categories,” not about being able to play games online or tinker with computerized toys. C’mon, Goldner, forget the stockholders for a minute and talk like a human!

Despite the PR speak, I’m excited.  Though I hope EA controls the urge to charge alot for tons of Monopoly themes :) And cool, I actually beat IGN with news when I read about this this morning at digitaltrends.com and posted about it at my blog.

The interesting thing is that it goes both ways.  If we saw some boardgames of EA titles it could be interesteing.

“For its part, Hasbro will receive the rights to create real-world toys and games based on certain EA franchises. Neither company revealed any particular properties Hasbro will make use of, but there is certainly a large pool of possibilities in the EA stable.”

Definitely, when I read this article, It lead to me thinking of all the possibilities, I just hope everything is done well.  Quality board game versions of EA properties and quality video game versions of Hasbro properties.  Maybe even a strategy game for Spore :)
