Media Watch: More Holiday Game Guides
Fewer than two weeks remain until the big day, which means it’s time for another round-up of game recommendations in the mainstream media, starting with the San Francisco Chronicle and its oh-so-cool rating system. What received the coveted “jumpy guy” in 2008? Dominion, Witch’s Brew, and Sorry! Sliders in the Family division; Stone Age, Agricola, Chinatown and Vikings in the Strategy category; and Gift Trap and Backseat Drawing in the Party class. Many more games are covered in the ”Board games for family fun” article by Joshua Kosman. Recommended!
A column by Ruth Butler in The Grand Rapids Press spends many of its inches complaining about the misbehavior of one Nick during a game of Monopoly, but her brother-in-law Scott K. – a game geek through and through – throws out recommendations for the typical trio (aka Carcassonne, Catan, Ticket to Ride) as well as Crokinole and Can’t Stop.
The UK Telegraph reruns the shot of skydivers playing Scrabble while talking about same, but also includes a plug for Carcassonne and an admonition about staying civil during those holiday game sessions.

While publicity is always good, it’s a shame to see such a disconnect between reviews and availability… Rio Grande has been out of stock of Stone Age and Vikings for at least 2-4 months. Many folks who read the chronicle article have been surprised and frustrated that they cannot buy the games that the newspaper recommends. Posted by Aaron Lawn on Dec 15, 2008 at 01:57 PM | #

Always a good point. One of the drawbacks of writing to a non-game playing public is that some of the highest profile games will sell out so quickly that an initial review will do no good. (So I’m relegated to writing reviews for the 2nd or 3rd printing of a title, since it finally becomes easier to purchase for the general public..) Posted by Matt J.
