The January 19, 2009 issue of The New Yorker has a decent spread on Scrabble by Judith Thurman in which she talks about the various tournaments, the odd birds who compete in them, the odd nature of the Scrabble Dictionary and the various online versions that have come and gone over the past decade. You need to subscribe to the magazine or purchase the issue to read the article online, but an abstract of the article is available.
