Memoir ‘44, BattleLore Expansions to Debut at Gen Con

Days of Wonder is debuting three game expansions at Gen Con 2008, which kicks off on August 14, with two of the expansions relating to Overlord scenarios for Memoir ‘44 and the third containing Epic Adventures for BattleLore. “We will have a very limited number of these three expansions available for sale at our booth,” says Mark Kaufmann.

The first of the two Memoir ‘44 items is the Operation Overlord expansion, which will be available in U.S. stores in September (for $20-25) and in European stores in October (for €20).

Operation Overlord includes an updated set of Overlord rules and two decks of updated Command cards (so that players will have the correct card mix for Overlord games). The other components included – eight dice and two sets of Army figure tokens that can represent figures from different nations – will make it easier for those who own one copy of Memoir ‘44 to play Overlord scenarios.

Which naturally brings us to the topic of the Hedgerow Hill Overlord BattleMap, the “first volume of the Memoir ‘44 BattleMap series,” according to the press release. This expansion includes two Overlord scenarios, Hedgerow Hell and The Cadets of Saumer, along with six Dodge truck miniatures, and it requires two copies of Memoir ‘44 or one copy plus the Operation Overlord expansion in order to play. The paper map, measuring 57” x 27.5”, has the terrain and unit positions preprinted on it, with scenario rules and historical background printed on the edges.

As with Operation Overlord, the Hedgerow Hill Overlord BattleMap is due out in September in the U.S. and in October in Europe. The retail price will be €16 and $18-22.

The BattleLore Troll Map Epic Adventure expansion contains two scenarios: For Troll and Country and Troll Bridge. With those titles – not to mention the thumbnail image kicking off this news item – you can correctly assume that the expansion includes a troll creature figure. The paper map, measuring 47” x 34”, comes preprinted with terrain, obstacles and unit positions; plop the right dudes in the right places, and you’re set to play.

The BattleLore Troll Map Epic Adventure, which retails for $18 in the U.S. and €16 in Europe, will be available at all stores in October. The Days of Wonder press release notes that this item is the “first release in the Epic Adventure Map series.”

It would be nice to have Overlord and Epic maps. Those are a pain to set up.

but...it seems kind of anticlimactic. Battlelore needs things like Elves riding Giant Wombats.

Can someone who is going to Gencon pester Mark to find out if they are going to do more than maps for awhile?

I would love to see a few maps that are impossible to make with thebasic terrain, or some maps of a different stle… winter maps and so forth for Battlelore.

It may be a great way for DoW to make some maps that would normally be impossible (large fortifications on the board, tons of terrain, lore masters or ‘encounters’ specific to a map).

It would be nice if the BL version came with extra minis that allowed players to use Call to Arms without the levy tokens.

I will look forward to seeing where DoW take this…

Cheers,

Giles.

I agree Giles. It doesn’t have to be something normally impossible for me to be interested, just something that would take forever to set up (like using all the terrain tiles).

Although I would be interested in some weird terrain features like snow or ash or something else. I mean it is a fantasy setting, the sky is the limit!
