Mike Doyle Shows Off More of QWG’s El Capitán

Mike Doyle has posted more images from QWG’s El Capitán, which is also being released by Z-Man Games, Ystari Games, and Pro Ludo. Mike clearly puts a ton of thought in every aspect of the game design; whether you like it or not may be another story, but everything you see or don’t see has been done for a specific reason. Head to Mike’s El Capitán Board and Card Preview for a looksee.

Actually, this looks like one of Doyle’s less radical makeovers.  Other than removing the second place city awards (a decision he may regret; I don’t mind halving a few numbers, but I suspect most players would rather not be bothered), it looks very much like the old Tycoon board with a new color scheme.  Which is fine with me; some folks didn’t like the look of that game, but I had no problem with it and appreciated its functionality.

I’m hoping this will turn out to be a true redesign of the excellent Tycoon and not just a reprint with new graphics.  It’ll be great if this gets the game into more hands, but I was kinda looking forward to some new twists from Messrs. Kramer and Rosner.  So far, Mike’s description follows the original game exactly.  Maybe the expansion buildings he refers to at the end will bring something new to the design.

All together we have now the following changes/improvements for the game:
- new grouping of the cities on the game board
- new payout table for distribution
- 3 new Distribution Cards
- new rules for the forts
- startmoney is 20 million florins instead of 15 million
- place up 4 multi travel cards instead of 2
- new rule for the loancards (not allowed in the first turn)
- new start player after a payday (a special startplayer figure is added)
- building up to 12 (instead of only 9) warehouses in a city
- limitation of warehouses in series (limited to 3 now)
- a rule for the first warehouse in a city

There will also be a first expansion “Portuguese Powers” in the gamebox with some extra cityboards and strategy !!

Special rules for 2 or 3 players (extra renovation fields)
And a special rule for 2 players (payday and additional warehouses)

The artwork is great and does have a very rich look to it, which fits with the game very well.

Jonny -> first expansion? Are more planned?
