More Information on the Caylus Premium Limited Edition from Ystari
Ystari’s Cyril Demaegd has passed on more details about the Caylus Premium Limited Edition, images of which can be seen on Mike Doyle’s Art Play.
The Caylus Premium Limited Edition will be released at Essen, sold only at the Ystari booth, and not reprinted in the same format, if at all. Only 1,500 copies will be made, and the price will be in the neighborhood of 49€. “We don’t want to print too much of them,” says Demaegd. “This edition will be a collectible, mainly for our pleasure because this is an expensive operation.” The game will include some special components, such as metal deniers.
Gamers will be able to preorder the game through the Ystari website, most likely starting in May. Demaegd says, “Those who preorder will receive a special gift, a figure of King Phillip the Fair made especially for this edition.”
Updated March 8: Cyril has confirmed that the Caylus Premium Edition will be available only at Spiel 2007 at the Ystari booth, although this plan might change in the months to come. Wait for the preorder page to go live in May for the final word on how these games will be distributed.

Although a great admirer of Mike Doyle’s work (and pleased to see that somebody is going to put it into production) I feel he has overlooked one major ‘plus’ point in the original board’s design. That is that it was designed in the ‘portrait’ format, as photographers say. This means it sits along the centre of the table with nobody needing to look at it upside down. I always cite this as an example of good boardgame design. The new board, on the other hand, appears to be changed to the landscape format, which means that probably half the players will be ‘reading’ the design upside down! It always surprises me that boardgame publishers so often ignore the fact that half the players will be sitting on the opposite side of the table. As another example, look at the DIE SÄULEN DER ERDE board - a complex design with, in this case, quite a bit of text. This could so easily have been in the portrait format but wasn’t!
