New Waves in Chess Design?

When I heard about New Wave Chess & Checkers I started having flashbacks to my high school days, thinking that someone had unleashed a Marc Almond-branded checkers set or a rethemed chess set dubbed Master & Servant.

In reality, the name seems like a foil to balance the game’s components: 275 lb. corrugated cardboard and flat printed pieces. Yes, the advantage of this new design from Paradoxy Products is that the board weighs almost nothing, yet the pieces will stay in place even “during a windstorm,” as the website boasts. I don’t know about you, but if I’m about to be hit by a tornado, I’m willing to concede the game and head for shelter…

Who still cares about Chess anymore when you have games like Agricola?!? Or even something that hasn’t been “solved” by computers like Go.

Still, interesting concept…

Ayep. Pieces will stay in place in a windstorm.

Board weighs only 3 ounces and “can be sailed like a frisbee”.

Which means the board won’t stay in place in a windstorm.
