Italian publisher Nexus Editrice has announced its 2008 line-up just prior to the Nuremberg convention starting on February 7. At the top of the list are three delayed projects: Age of Conan: The Board Game (now due June 2008); the Collector’s Edition of War of the Ring (August 2008 - Gen Con), and Battles of Napoleon: The Eagle and the Lion, with artwork by Mike Doyle (June 2008). Other items in the Nexus line-up:

- A Conan the Barbarian miniatures game, with prepainted 35mm figures; the first release in the series will be Cimmerian Rage, and additional sets with figures from the Conan storyline will be added in supplemental figure packs.
- February—Flying Legend and Eagles of the Reich, two booster packs for the WW2 series; also, a miniatures package of WW1 airplanes
- April—Immelmann and Dogfight Squadron, two booster packs to add more planes to the WW1 series

I think the information on Operation World War II is a backward. Operation Overlord is a miniatures rules set, not a boardgame. Heck, we played it just last week. In the miniatures game, play order is card-driven. You have various maneuver cards in your hand like fire, move, assault, etc. with numbers from 1 to 9. Basically the person who moves first selects a card from his like “move 7” and says what unit is moving and where to. The opponent then gets to play a lower card like “fire 5” which he could then target the moving piece. The first player now could play a lower card like “suppression 3” to target the firing unit. This continues until a “1” is played or neither side wishes to play cards. Then the actions are resolved beginning with the lowest card. So the suppression goes before the fire and if the fire survives then attacks the move. If the move survives it carries out it’s move. A great “fog of war” limited-control type game. This would make for a great boardgame conversion. Posted by Kevin Rutherford on Feb 7, 2008 at 11:16 AM | #

Kevin, my background in wargames is minimal, so I was using the info that Nexus sent: “Operation World War II is the evolution of ‘Operation Overlord’, the board game created by Massimo Torriani and previously published by Italeri.” Nexus went on to describe the release of quarterly Battle Books that will be accompanied by 1/72 scale figures and vehicles, so Operation World War II is definitely a miniatures game. I wonder if Nexus is buying the rights to the game. Italeri had originally released the game with their plastic miniatures. Something happened and they parted ways with the designer. He has since offered the rules for free with all the expansions (http://www.alzozero.com). I’m wondering if maybe they are going to re-release the miniatures game then. I just got off the phone with my buddy and told that it looked like they were releasing it as a boardgame and he thought it would be great to doing a card-driven version of Squad Leader. Hopefully, we will get more info on this soon. Posted by Kevin Rutherford on Feb 7, 2008 at 03:41 PM | #

Kevin, Nexus just sent me a note stating the press release should have described Operation Overlord as a wargame, not a board game. Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Feb 11, 2008 at 01:57 PM | #
