Patrick Korner: A Farewell to Thursdays

Well, it was only a matter of time.

Eventually, NFL football would return.  Ah, the crunch of bodies, the dislocation of joints, the fines for excessive end-zone celebrations…

But that’s not what this column is about.

It’s actually a short and sweet farewell to Thursdays for me.  You see, it’s become (sadly) increasingly obvious that I just can’t commit to a weekly column any more.  Some weeks I don’t have anything I think is worth sharing, some weeks I just have no time.  Case in point:

Last week, I traveled from San Francisco to Fresno to Los Angeles to Vancouver to Salt Spring Island to Vancouver to Seattle to Vancouver to Montreal and back home to Vancouver again.

Phew.

Where, pray tell, do I find the time to write?  More and more often, the answer is nowhere.  And that’s not fair to the loyal readers of this site, who tune in to BGN expecting new and edgy content (or at least something approaching coherent thought) on a daily basis.

And so, it is time to bid adieu.  But not for good.  I will be moving to at-large status (which means I’ll be able to write longer, more in-depth articles less frequently – look for the long-awaited return of Vintage Games in the fall) and will, of course, be doing my usual bit to make sure the Essen preview is as complete as possible.

Which reminds me – roughly 75% chance I’ll get to go to Essen again this year.  One potential sticking point?  Finding a way to pay my way over there.  No, I’m not above selling myself, which means that I’ll gladly spend time in a booth / do other Essen-related stuff in exchange for dineros.  Any publishers and such – drop me a line if there’s something to be arranged… (my email address is my first initial followed by my last name at gmail.com in case anyone’s curious).

So who will be taking my place?  Well, I know who it is, but I can’t tell you.  But I’ll say this: Thursdays will never be the same.  I think you’ll enjoy what the new guy has to say, and he has a pretty interesting take on games and such – definitely something to look forward to.  Especially around … oh, I shouldn’t say that, it’d give the farm away.

It’s been great providing random thoughts for y’all – thanks especially to those who I’ve met personally who have told me they like my work – I really appreciate it.  I hope you’ll continue to enjoy what I have to say, just a little less frequently.

And now, for my final sign-off, a phrase immortalized by Aliens:

“Game over, man!

You were running out of stuff to say?

I didn’t notice.

Oh well. I’ll miss you.

i would have thought that all that plane time would make for some good writing spells.  Ah well, we’ll miss your column, hope you’ll still make time for those translations, though!  Much appreciated.

When I first started looking at board game websites, you, Greg and Rick on the Gamewire were a must-read for me.  Thanks for your humorous take on the hobby, and congratulations on keeping your priorities straight (family, work, sleep,.......boardgames).

Alles Gute, und hoffentlich sehen wir uns eines Tages in Essen!
