Play Black Vienna Online

Black Vienna, designed by Gilbert Obermair, is a well-loved but fragile deduction game that was published over two decades ago by German publisher Franckh-Kosmos (now Kosmos). Game play is reminiscent of Clue but with more strategy and no die-rolling.

In Black Vienna, 3-6 players are trying to identify three spies from a set of 27. On a turn, a player reveals a card with three spies listed on it and challenges an opponent to identify how many of these spies (0-3) she has. All of this information is open, so as Greg Aleknevicus points out, “a single mistake by any of the players ruins the game for everybody.” Perhaps I’ve been lucky so far – or the players extremely detail-oriented – but I’ve avoided such a blunder in my two games. Other players, however, have bemoaned spending an hour on a game only to have everyone chasing the wrong path due to a single mistake.

To remedy this situation, Aleknevicus has created Black Vienna Online, a computer-moderated version of the game that eliminates any chance of player errors. The site includes online rules as well as instructions for how to use the moderator.

I’d love to play this online, but having to know and enter the email addresses of all the players up front is a little harsh.

Black Vienna works really well over the web and Greg has done a great job. Definitely check this out.

You can find other players at the Yahoo Group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/black_vienna).

Should the site prove popular, it’s likely that I’ll add a user registration system. This will mean that players will enter their own e-mail addresses and new cases can be created simply by selecting players from a list.

For now, the best way to join a game is to post to the Yahoo group asking to be included in the next case someone starts up.
