Play the New Seven Wonders of the World

The New 7 Wonders of the World were announced on 7/7/07, and after more than 100 million people around the world cast their Internet ballots, the winners came out to be:

  • The Great Wall, China
  • Petra, Jordan
  • Christ Redeemer, Brazil
  • Machu Picchu, Peru
  • Chichén Itzá, Mexico
  • Colosseum, Rome
  • Taj Mahal, India
Admittedly, this type of poll is a bit silly, something that president and founder of the New7Wonders Foundation, Bernard Weber, made clear with this quote at the press conference announcing the winner: “The people of the world have created seven things that everyone will remember.” Only seven, Bernard?

(One news article about the event also mentions that Weber “presented plaques to all the finalists.” Did he try to shake The Great Wall’s hand as well?)

Bringing the subject back to games, we can play Kramer and Lübke’s Colosseum, Knizia’s Taj Mahal, Burkhardt’s Machu Pichu (not recommended), and numerous games about the Great Wall, including the forthcoming Huang Di and Chang Cheng. What about the other three wonders? Can anyone recommend games that fit these subjects?

Tikal or Incan Gold?  Not sure if they work for Chichén Itzá or not.  Not sure if it’s Aztec or Incan.

Sorry, I am weak on my 7 wonders info :).

Or Maya, it may be Mayan too.  Geez, I am so confused :).

Personally, I’m kinda bummed that Stonehenge and Easter Island didn’t make the final 7.  They are both awe inspiring, have mysterious origins, and have games about them.  What more could you want?

How come the Roman Aquaducts weren’t on the list?

Er, wrong guy...but close!

I agree.  Stonehenge, Easter Island, the Pyramids of Giza, and the Kremlin all impress me more than several that made the list.

The Kremlin is a bit of a toss up, but I think the other 3 all belong in the top 7.

Actually, the Pyramids of Giza were included in the list—sort of. Egyptian officials were offended by the idea that the Pyramids—the only surviving ancient wonder—would have to re-apply for wonder status, so the organizers of the New 7 Wonders campaign said that the Pyramids would be included in the list, along with the seven locations that raised the most votes. So the list is still named the New 7 Wonders, yet it contains eight items.

What was the point of all this again?

Sorry, Easter Island should have beat out the Christ figure. Give me a break. Besides, then we would have two games for that Wonder.

The point of it: tourism marketing!

Alhambra was in the last finalist list of 20 monuments, but not in the 7 winners.

Alhambra, in Granada, Andalucía (Spain).
Alhambra, by Dirk Henn (the game).

I’m on this with Eric Burgess. The Christ figure isn’t that impressive or anything, but the Easter Islands? Man, is that a piece of work.

Maybe a good rule would be that a monument wouldn’t be available for consideration if there wasn’t a game named after it yet?

Chichen Itza is in the game Maya.

Petra was the location of the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.  There are games in BGG for the other two Indiana Jones movies, but not that one!

I’m drawing a blank for games set in Rio de Janeiro, or even Brazil.  Someone should get working on that!

Rio is one of the cities in Tycoon, although you’re building hotels, not religious monuments!

Strand Cup as a game about (the beaches of) Rio.

In lieu of Chichen Itza, I would play the much more stunning wonder (and game) Tikal!
