Preußische Ostbahn Coming Again – But From Whom?
Earlier today I tweeted a statement from Counter editor Stuart Dagger in issue #45 of that magazine. While commenting on the Winsome Games’ title Preußische Ostbahn, Dagger noted in passing that Queen Games would release a version of the game at Spiel. Winsome’s John Bohrer sent along the following correction in response: “I can affirm that Preußische Ostbahn has been licensed and I can affirm that Preußische Ostbahn will be produced without any rules changes. I am not at liberty to say who the Licensee is or when the Licensee will produce the game or even what title it will have at that time. I am afraid that Stuart’s statement in Counter is incorrect.”

Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only person out there who was excited to find a second-hand copy of WC when I already owned CE; I like the portability and lack of visual clutter of the original. Selfishly, I’d prefer the new production be simpler and require something less than a four-inch box. :P Posted by Aaron N. Tubbs on Jun 17, 2009 at 06:54 AM | #

Your view is also held by the majority of Winsome’s customers, but the mass market productions are aimed at a much broader market with a different perspective than Winsome’s small customer base. Queen did a wonderful job with Chicago Express, as did FRED with Age of Steam, WM-D with TransAmerica & TransEuropa, Eagle with Railroad Tycoon and TM Spiele with Volldampf. I have a feeling that many of Winsome’s customers would be completely satisfied to just buy the ruleset and make their own components. Posted by Dan Corban on Jun 17, 2009 at 10:33 AM | #

I have a feeling you are not a Winsome customer. Hmmm, looking at the records, I *know* you are not a Winsome customer. Have a nice day! Posted by John Bohrer on Jun 17, 2009 at 10:47 AM | #

Shelf space is a non-inconsequential consideration for me. If Wabash, Pampas (and hopefully soon the Early Railways Set, Preussische, GM&O and Essen 09 Set (apologize for the nested parentheses but just noticed how many plastic clamshells that’s going to be!)) et al came in conventional boxes, I’d have nowhere to put them. :) I do like the graphic design of CE, but not at the expense of that much space. Will be curious to see what shape the new Preussische takes. Hopefully I’ll have my own copy by then and it’ll be more the ‘detached observer’ curiosity! pk Posted by Patrick Korner on Jun 17, 2009 at 12:06 PM | #

Of course, it could be the “when” rather than the “who” that is incorrect. Go back and read the introductory comments again. Posted by Tim Synge on Jun 17, 2009 at 02:46 PM | #

John’s statement is that at least one of the following statements is false:
1) Queen Games would release a version of the game
John does not state which of those three statements is false, merely that at least one of them is, possibly even all three.
> Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only person out
FVWLIW I’ve been selling off spare copies of Wabash Cannonball to people looking for the smaller form factor—several of whom already owned Queen’s Chicago Express. They’re been quite popular! (All gone now though)
> I have a feeling that many of Winsome’s
Perhaps. There are also those who admire and even prefer Winsome’s presentation style. It certainly has a certain personality and even (charming?) flair that’s all its own. As Ben Keightly’s geeklist lampooned, there’s no mistaking Winsome Game’s visual brand. Posted by J C Lawrence on Jun 17, 2009 at 04:54 PM | #

Mostly repeating myself, but I’ve done the print and play thing before, I’d much rather get the Winsome production. The only thing I want to provide myself is the poker chips. Death to paper money. Again, I’ll admit being an odd duck. If you decide to sell Winsome versions of Preußische Ostbahn when the reprint comes out, I’ll happily take one off your hands. Posted by Aaron N.
