Ryan B.: The First Column and Welcome

Well, this is my first column for Boardgame News. I want to start by welcoming you to the Boardgame News website. I can tell you we are already going to be breaking rules. Our first broken rule? Collectively, everyone at BGN pretty much agrees that the word “boardgame” should actually be one word, in and of itself. The current accepted and correct grammatical way to write it is as “board game.” Two words.

Just in case you were wondering…

But we plan to break the grammatical rules and conventional wisdom here and use a history of societal precedent in allowing cultural mores and precepts to dictate modern lexicon… so that “boardgame” does, in fact, become correct grammar in the future. So are we rebellious or what? And see, we already have goals!

So now that is out of the way, let me just take a moment to thank you, the reader, for stopping by and making the journey with us as we seek to become the next great website about boardgames. Many of you have followed our writings while some of us were with Gamefest… and as I have often said, I have always really enjoyed our readers there because the discussions and comments were always intelligent and passionate. We certainly expect more of the same here at BGN.

So a little about me. As many of you have come to know, I am a little different than most of my compatriots at Boardgame News in the respect that I prefer the lighter, more family oriented games over the heavier Eurogames. I don’t play wargames and I have never collected CCGs. But, of course, my lighter games do need to have some strategic teeth and of course, I strive to make sure my writing is not lightweight. Ticket to Ride, I’m the Boss, Scotland Yard… that is the perspective in which I write from. So what I seek to offer you is a fresh and somewhat unique perspective in looking at all of the different types of games we report on. Overall, I think BGN has excellent balance in their writing staff. And that balance translates to a comprehensive viewpoint of games…from every perspective. So I already know I’ll be just as excited to read BGN each day as I am to write for them each week. And I hope you are just as excited as I am. So sit back and enjoy.

We’ll start up next week with a full column. We’ll look at some of the current manufacturer websites and rate their websites… whose website is good? Whose website needs work? In the meantime, you will get to hear from Valerie Putman and Larry Levy as your weekend columnists. I’m energized to hear what they have to say, as they both are superb additions to our writing group. So I know you will stay tuned for them over that nice weekend breakfast of bacon, eggs and french toast in Chicago. Or maybe a nice chocolate-y churros in Seville, Spain, a spicy kedgeree in Manchester, England or maybe a miso soup and rice with nori in Osaka, Japan.

Wherever you might happen to be, I guess this time… we have the world covered!

Till next time…. Peace.

Ryan B.

Then again, compounding like “boardgame” is a very typical feature in the German language. So “boardgame” is just a German way to say it!

If “boardgame” is one word, shouldn’t we use “BN” instead of “BGN” for the abbreviation?  ;)

I think that “BGN” is more effective because most gamers are used to say “BGG” ...

Also, we wouldn’t want to confuse Boardgame News (BGN) and Barnes & Nobles (BN)…

Thank for all of the comments.  For me personally, I think BGN has more of a cadence and ring to it.  But that’s just me.  : )
