Scott Tepper: The 2007 Scotties
I know it’s the “thing” to do at the end of the year to say what your favorite game of the year is, but I have a hard time doing that. It’s like Sophie’s Choice for me when someone asks me what my favorite game is. How can you choose between all your children? While it’s difficult for me to make a general statement about which game of 2007 is the best, I don’t have a problem when the field of comparison is narrowed down. So here is my list of best games of 2007in very specific categories, or as I am choosing to call it, “The Scotties”. Do you have any to add? Maybe I’ll include yours in next years’s list.
Best game whose name can be pronounced like it’s a disease: Amyitis (runners-up Medievalia & Zooloretto)
Game whose bits look the most edible: Galaxy Trucker
Best game sold by an insurance company: Animalia
Most surprisingly successful underused theme in Eurogames: Space (for Galaxy Trucker & Race for the Galaxy)
Best game that sounds edible: Agricola (runner-up Hamburgum & Nacho Loco, Portobello Market)
Best game that guys don’t want to admit they enjoy: Liebe & Intrige
Funniest rules: Galaxy trucker
Game whose name sounds like a detergent that would rip your clothes to shreds: Tide of Iron
Most evil looking bits for a children’s game: the mice in Burg Appenzell
Best game whose name can be pronounced like it’s a disease: Amyitis (runner-up Femetta)
Best contenders so far for nomination for SDJ: Darjeeling
Most suggestive title: Big Balls (runners-up, Finger Ball and Gassy Gus)
Game most susceptible to pieces being knocked over: Darjeeling (explanation: I must have knocked the ramp over easily 4 times while demoing this game. Twice during the same explanation)
Best “freebies”: The nice wooden squares accidently included in Hamburgum
Thickest cardboard: The Circle
Funnest bits to play with outside the game it came in: The swimmers from Get Bit. (runner-up, the moose from Antler Island)
Game that you don’t want your child playing without supervision: Der Kleine Medicus

Looks like Amy-itis won twice for the same award. :^D Posted by Greg Williams on Dec 31, 2007 at 11:19 AM | #

For me it was a simple choice of the best game of the year, even if there are four 9:s. The last 2 years there were only one single 9 (Canal Mania 2006 and Parthenon: Rise of the Aegean 2005), so apparently there are more good game this year according to my taste. Both Hamburgum and Brass are only played once and their ratings might change.
My top 2007 list

Amyitis is most funny for someone who can speak both German and English, as an “Ami” (pronounced Ah-mee) is slang for an American.

Most refreshing game: AgriCola. Can’t wait to see how Diet AgriCola fares. Posted by Kevin Wood on Dec 31, 2007 at 11:21 PM | #
