Snow Tails Coming from Asmodee

The Lamont brothers released their fifth game, Snow Tails, at Spiel 08, and while that edition was limited to a thousand copies, Asmodee has now picked up the game and will publish and distribute it in Q2 2009. If you’re not familiar with the game, perhaps this description by Age of Gods designer Croc will help: “...a sort of Car Wars but with more dogs and less flamethrowers!” No? Then turn to my Snow Tails preview, published in September 2008.

This game has been added to Gone Cardboard.

Excellent.  I’m not sure how big Asmodee is, though.  Do you think they’re sizable enough for Snow Tails to get serious consideration for next year’s SdJ, Eric?  I think the game hits the award’s sweet spot nicely.

Asmodee distributes in France and North America, but not in Germany, as far as I know. For example, Pro Ludo, not Asmodee, distributes Senji and Formula D in Germany, along with games from many other publishers. No word yet on whether Pro Ludo or another German company has picked up Snow Tails.

Pro Ludo was bought by Asmodee recently and about a month ago the name was formally changed to Asmodee from Pro Ludo.  At the same time they dropped the accent, as Asmodee is now a trans-national company…

Thanks for the clarification, Patrick. I must have missed that memo, although the name change was from Asmodée to Asmodee, not from Pro Ludo to Asmodee. The Pro Ludo name is still in use as the company distributes games by a number of publishers, and – why lookie there – it announced a German version of Snow Tails yesterday. I guess Larry’s dream of the Lamonts nabbing a poppel lives on…

I’d have to disagree a little, Eric, as per this news item from Spielbox on 17 Oct (translation is mine):

“In Sept 2006 Asmodee bought into Pro Ludo with the goal of expanding its European distribution network. At the start of 2008 Asmodee expanded its efforts in that realm, by purchasing the companies Hodin in Belgium as well as Cromola in Spain. Investments were made in Pro Ludo as well and numerous changes made: A new Country manager, larger office space, additional sales personnel and a wide selection of top quality exclusively distributed games.
And now the change is complete: Pro Ludo, in the meantime a wholly owned subsidiary of Asmodee, is changing its name and will be known as Asmodee from now own.
There are changes at Asmodee too. The old dragon logo, a relic of its interests in the roleplaying realm, has disappeared.  And Asmodee is no longer inclusive of the accent. The publisher is now open to all games, from light party games to complex strategy games. Through its worldwide divisions (Belgium, Germany, Spain, USA), Asmodee has become a leading international company.”

I’m guessing they just haven’t updated the web layout yet…

Thanks for the clarification, Patrick! I must have missed that news item in the run-up to Spiel.
