Ted Alspach Is Sneaky

Ted Alspach may rant about game hype in his Board 2 Pieces comic strip, but he’s clearly learned a thing or two about how to get people talking. To wit, Alspach presents this list of thirteen things you might not know about the upcoming Age of Steam expansions from Bézier Games that will be released at Spiel 08 in October.

  1. There are more than twice as many new maps coming out compared to 2007’s six maps – but the maps are in three new expansions, same as last time.
  2. The number of players for one of these maps is different than on any other
    AoS map.
  3. All of the maps are designed to work with “classic” Warfrog Age of Steam as well as Mayfair’s Age of Steam: Rails to Riches.
  4. You’ll find “Manchester” on one map and “England” on another, but neither takes place in Europe.
  5. One map does takes place in Europe, in a location many AoS players are likely to be familiar with already, yet there are no AoS expansions for it.
  6. A special, limited edition expansion of 300 numbered copies will be the most appropriate game/expansion ever to be released at Spiel in Essen.
  7. Some of these maps allow for a full game of Age of Steam in less than 60 minutes with up to four players.
  8. One of the expansions plays just as tight with three players as it does with six. Maybe even tighter.
  9. Even if I told everyone about a bunch of the maps, they would still be a secret.
  10. Pineapples do not play an important role on any of the maps!
  11. Hidden information is a game play element on some of these maps.
  12. One map is a direct result of Ted listening to a song from the Spice Girls’ first CD!
  13. These new expansions will be officially announced on BGN on July 2nd!
Wow, this list is informative. I mean, who knew that Ted listened to the Spice Girls?! That Disco Inferno expansion for AoS makes a lot more sense now…

My guess: “2 Become 1”.

You know it’s um, Scary how many people know Spice Girls songs. And now that I’m thinking about it, Sneaky Spice would’ve been pretty cool.

It’s interesting to see that perhaps the new Age of Steam from Mayfair will be called Rails to Riches.

If you really want to design an interesting Age of Steam expansion, try listening to Pink Floyd.

I am betting on an Essen Spielfair map.

All signs point to an Essen map.  I agree with Scott :)

At least 13 new maps is impressive.  That’ll increase the total number of maps by 21% (by my count)!

The Spice Girls song has to be Wannabe, doesn’t it?  With tracks that go zig-a-zag-aaah

I want to pre-order them already.

Like, now.

Patience, if truly a virtue, is one I lack.
