By Tom Vasel
July 27, 2006

Because I finally got Skype to work, here’s another episode of the Dice Tower!

In this episode, I continue the contest for Darter, as well as listen to the latest news from Rick and Moritz.  Sam rejoins me, talks about his gaming in America - and Jason tells us why he prefers wargames.  We answer some questions, and Eric Burgess joins me to talk about our top ten worst themes in games.  We have the show available in .mp3 format, which you can download below by right clicking the link below, and selecting “save link as”.

Here’s the show!: The Dice Tower - Episode 59

The top ten list can be found here.

Great show guys!  I know you guys are kinda conservative-minded so I was very interested to hear your Top 10 this week.

I find it interesting how (correct me if I’m wrong) a war game wasn’t picked.  In war, tens of thousands die, yet it’s an acceptable theme.  However, a teenager smoking a cigarette and having sex won’t even be played by those same people.  You might say that because it’s “history” it’s acceptable, because you’re re-creating history - but teenagers smoking cigarettes and having sex are part of history too I guess.

There’s this notion by some that board games are all supposed to be family-oriented, but we certainly wouldn’t say that about films for instance.  Maybe the Top Ten list should have been “Worst games for families with younger kids”, then I would have agreed with you on games like FFFF.  Although, would war games be part of that list?

The Germans are rather liberal minded people, so these more mature themes are more acceptable with younger audiences.  However, Moritz mentioned that German publishers were kinda discourage from producing war games some years back because of the holocaust.  Meanwhile in the states, war games have always been perfectly fine.

Before I played German games and had German friends, I always thought the German sense of humor wasn’t funny and quite strange.  Now I’m beginning to understand their humor, their weird themes on games now make a lot more sense.  I absolutely love the bizarre German themes! :-)

I’m still trying to figure out how Bean Trader and California have worse themes than the game about renting out toilets!
