The Gathering Storm, Puerto Rico and More: An Update from Rio Grande

Following on the heels of yesterday’s update from Z-Man Games, which featured a bevy of game delays, here are revised release dates for a dozen of titles from Jay Tummelson and Rio Grande Games:

  • Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm – from June/July to August
  • St. Petersburg Expansion – from June/July to August
  • Bonnie & Clyde – from July to August
  • Ra Dice Game – from July to August/September
  • Burger Joint – from August to September
  • Mago Magino – from June to September
  • Carcassonne: Cult, War and Creativity – from June/July to September
  • Samurai Card Game – from August to September
  • The Great American Railroad Game – from August to September/October
  • Witch’s Brew – from June to Q3 2008 (or later)
  • El Caballero – from June to an unknown date
  • Puerto Rico Expansion – from October to never
Yes, this last one is a real blow, but Jay says, “The PR Expansion will not happen.” Stick with the expansion you already have, PR fans…

As for the depictedNew World: A Carcassonne Game, that release date has remained the same: August 2008. Here’s hoping the ship sails on time!

These games have been updated on Gone Cardboard.

As much as I’m disappointed that the PR expansion isn’t going to happen I’m glad they had the integrity not to shovel out a crappy PR expansion. They could easily make a quick buck based on the original’s good name.

Any word on Veritas?

Posted by Michael Potts on Jun 20, 2008 at 06:33 PM | #

Bas Luijten includes Veritas in his Essen 2008 Canonical Geeklist, Michael.

I second Alan’s words… now, it would be nice to know why… Is the explanation elsewhere?

Total speculation on my part, Robert, but we may never know.  Seyfarth tends to be relatively closed mouth about his games.  But yeah, I’d love to know what the approaches were for the expansion, more for my curiousity than because I think the game needs one.

Thanks Larry.

Bas also includes the Puerto Rico Expansion in the Essen Geeklist – or at least he did through today. Plans change, as do publishing schedules, so there’s no guarantee on Veritas. I asked Jay only about the next couple of months since there seems to be a backlog recently. I’ll check in again in a month or so and see what stands where.

And what about the Ra reedition originally rescheduled for this summer?

Posted by Javier Barón on Jun 21, 2008 at 07:12 AM | #

Wow! I wonder whether a possible Witch’s Brew SdJ win would shake things up. I’d hate to think that we might have to wait until Q3 (or later) for this year’s winner to make it to an English language edition…

A lot of disappointing delays in the past few days. Oh, well - I guess I can actually *save* some money for when things actually ship…

David, not only save some $, but now I have even more time to go back to the recent classics (Caylus Magna Carta, Notre Dame, etc) given the derth/slow-down of good game releases.

Posted by Robert Ramirez on Jun 21, 2008 at 07:30 PM | #

Robert, I hear you. We’re getting a chance to visit some titles that were missed and to revisit some classics (or at least, very good titles from the past). Got in a great game of In the Year of the Dragon last weekend and I suspect we’ll be playing a lot of older titles during the annual 4th of July gaming weekend.

David, in the past 7 days alone I’ve played: Caylus Magna Carta (nickel), In the Year of the Dragon (nickel), Phoenicia (nickel), and Race for the Galaxy (dime).

Has the Race for the Galaxy reprint slipped to August as well?  Or has it already happened?

what happened to Roma II??? thougth it was on the list for 2008 but now I don’t see it listed anyplace on gone cardboard?

Posted by Marc Magnera on Jul 1, 2008 at 01:54 AM | #

Marc, Queen typically reveals no info on its upcoming releases prior to Spiel. Stefan Feld did give an interview on Brettspillguiden back in April 2008 which implied that Roma II was still on track for Spiel 08, something that Queen’s developer Bernd Dietrich had uncharacteristically suggested as well on BGG.

Having said all that, Jay just confirmed that he has no release date set for Batavia, which Queen released earlier this year. My guess is that Roma II will appear this fall, but the international version won’t come out until Spring 2009, as was the pattern with Airships and Eketorp from Spiel 07 to this year.
