The Great American Railroad Game – Cancelled; Other RGG News

Jay Tummelson of Rio Grande Games has confirmed that The Great American Railroad Game – which was to be a new version of Reiner Knizia’s Stephensons Rocket, with game play set in the U.S. – has been cancelled due to production issues.

As for upcoming Rio Grande titles, Tummelson says that Chicago Express, The Princes of Machu Picchu, Alhambra: The Power of the Sultans and the Alhambra: Limited Gold Edition – with wooden bits – are due to be released in December 2008 or January 2009.

These games have been updated on Gone Cardboard.

I don’t see how there can be production issues for one game that doesn’t have anything special in it, when every other game is on as normal.

Production issues = We just did a train game and we don’t want to produce another one so soon?

It was supposed to be a new map (US I believe). So perhaps it’s that they spent so much time trying to make a good map, and it wasn’t working out, so they just gave up.

I like the creativity that you guys are putting forth. I propose that the German and Chinese printers that Jay approached objected to having “The Great American” on anything that left their presses.

I’m sure this was a real project from beginning to end, but given the great mystery around it, that there were few, if any, details released, and now that it’s been cancelled, it almost has the feel of vaporware.  I guess Dorothy just woke up with a bad headache and everything’s black and white again.

It’s a Knizia game - I’m sure someone, somewhere, will publish it.

This is a real shame. We should all ask Zev to publish it.

Far from being mythical, I have actually played it.

Oh no, Christopher, I feel you fading away!  You were just there, now it’s all misty, I can’t tell…

Does anyone remember a fellow named Dearlove?

Dave Kudzma wrote It was supposed to be a new map (US I believe). So perhaps it’s that they spent so much time trying to make a good map, and it wasn’t working out, so they just gave up. because maps of America, especially maps of America with train routes on them are so rare ;-)
