Edwin Wong ::Think:: New Weekly Column on Designer Games
After an 8-month absence, Malaysian gamers finally get their weekly column on designer games again!
Only this time, its on Saturdays, as part of The New Straits Times’s new weekend entertainment pullout, “6”.
The previous weekly column, “Wanna Play”, did a lot to create awareness of our wondeful hobby among Malaysians, resulting in a massive increase in retail outlets, cafes, clubs, and most importantly, people having a great time.
Unfortunately, as part of an editorial restructuring, the column “ran out of space” around the middle of last year, as the editorial team went back to the drawing board, in search of ... well, only they know!
Fortunately, the hobby had reached a new level by then, and despite the media silence, continued to attract new people into the hobby through the active game cafes and clubs. Further, it wasen’t total media silence as the rival daily, The Star, kept their weekly “Cards & Boards” column going, and with it, at least some coverage for major announcements, since “Cards & Boards” was primarily a column focusing on CCGs (Magic in particular). No matter, we were grateful!
Finally, after an 8-month absence, the editorial team emerged from their thinking corner and informed me that they wanted the column back in their new Saturday edition… but with a twist.
No more free wheeling for me. They wanted me to explore a theme which essentially exposed their readers to the versatility of our beloved games. “Let our readers know which 5 games you would recommend for a variety of situations"… such as:
- For people who hate games.
- For people with shaky hands.
- For people who love stabbing their friends in the back.
You get the drift…
Do let me know if you think of some zany siutations! Who knows, it might be just what I need for next week’s column!
[By the way, this also explains my 8 months+ absence from BGN!]

Edwin, I just thought that since Mayalsia was so far away, it took that long for your column to arrive. :) Posted by Jeff Lee on Jul 26, 2007 at 05:10 PM | #

Ha2, good one! Here’s the real story… Caught up with Rick in Essen, came back, got an email from him saying he was exiting BGN, and that he had written his last article. For some reason, I stopped writing too! Can’t explain why. Not just on BGN, but also my weekly column “Wanna Play” in The New Straits Times. After 8 months+, I started writing again (for “6)… and here I am again… Can’t explain why. Posted by Edwin Wong on Jul 27, 2007 at 06:06 AM | #
