Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries to Cross Borders, Head South

In perhaps one of the least surprising “new” game announcements of 2008, Days of Wonder has announced that it will release Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries – previously available only in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland – to the rest of the game world in September 2008.

Like 2007’s Switzerland expansion, Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries is for 2-3 players. “I was enjoying the Switzerland map so much that I wanted to make another game for just 2-3 players,” says designer Alan R. Moon. “Plus, the sales of Ticket to Ride in Scandinavia have been very strong, so there had been some talk about doing a Scandinavia map. Those two things, along with the geographical configuration of the countries and the location of the major cities, combined to make a 2-3 player game seem like an obvious choice.”

The press release announcing the game mentions that “this special edition...is expected to be available for only a limited time.” As Mark Kaufmann of Days of Wonder explains, “The only way to get reasonable production costs for this version is to print it as part of a manufacturing run for additional copies for the Scandinavia markets.... While we have had very vocal demand from Ticket to Ride fans for this version, it’s difficult to gauge just how deep that interest goes, so we had to be cautious in how many we printed. By being up front about the limited number that will be available, we hope that the dedicated Ticket to Ride fans will be able to get a copy before they are gone.”

Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries will retail for €40 or $50 depending on which currency you use. This game has been added to Gone Cardboard.

I am interested enough to purchase one, and I have to assume now this is the first “new” game to be Alliance exclusive?

Probably not, Dave. Days of Wonder had said that the Alliance deal would start on July 1, which means that the Shadows over Camelot expansion, Merlin’s Company, as well as the Memoir ‘44 campaign bag would be released under this new distribution plan.
