Two Contests for Spiel 07: Caylus Premium Edition & I’m Your Mule
With the Spiel 07 game fair taking place just over a month from now in Essen, Germany, it’s a good time to announce the following two contests:
- How High Can You Fly?
Ystari Games is donating a copy of the Caylus Premium Edition, which retails for €65, for a contest on Boardgame News. To win the contest, you must determine the largest possible score that a player can obtain in a two-player game. To put everyone on the same ground, assume the following:
- You take the first turn.
- The jeweller tile is not included.
- You have embedded a homunculus in your opponent and can make that player do exactly what you want.
While solo Caylus scores near 370 have been posted on the Geek, Attia says that in a two-player game, “You probably have to sacrifice quite a few points, especially in the beginning of the game, to allow the second player to get enough cash so that he won’t pass too early in the last two-thirds of the game (where most of the points are scored). Also, the second player might help rush up the building of the early castle sections to reach the most valuable favors earlier (while keeping the maximum number of game turns).”
To enter this contest, which has a deadline of September 25th, you must send an email to the BGN editor with your high score in the subject line along with the words “Caylus Contest.” In the body of the email, you must detail the steps you took to achieve that score. These details will be painstakingly checked by yours truly. If two individuals tie for the high score, the player whose opponent scored the most will win; this keeps you from tanking the other player too badly. If people are still tied, then the player who submitted his or her entry first will win.
- I’m Your Mule
To enter this contest, which also ends on September 25th, you must post a comment on this thread asking to be entered into the contest. You’re encouraged to list the games that interest you, although you can certainly change your mind if you’re the lucky winner. If a game is a limited edition that requires a reservation, you’re responsible for reserving a copy of that game.
This contest might not rank among the biggest and best of all time (since you’re paying for everything), but if you’re not going to Essen, here’s your chance to get those games you most desire.

Both of these are awesome contests. I’ll have to wait and see what gets announced in the next month or so, but I am certainly interested in:
Obviously, I would have to winnow down the list. Also, I have to wait on a final list until Ferti has made their Essen announcements. Any new PitchCar items will move to the top of the list… Posted by David Reed on Sep 6, 2007 at 04:07 PM | #

I need a mule! I already have pre-orders down for the Cas$h ‘n Gun$ expansion (gotta getta Uzi) and the AoS “War in Iraq/NY Subway” maps. My third choice would be Veflixxt Hich2. Any I’m feeling generous, so I’d give my remaining two game picks to someone else. So if...I mean, WHEN I win, draw a “second place” name as well. :) Posted by Jon Theys on Sep 6, 2007 at 04:09 PM | #

I want a mule too. I’ll come back later with a wish list, I hadn’t thought too much about it, since I wasn’t going. It would have to include the Cash n Guns expansion (w/ Essen UZI), Caylus Premium, Bang Bullet Edition, Power Grid deck expansion, Midgard: Städte, Schätze, Abenteuer. I’m sure there’s more, just need to research. Posted by Jonathan Greisz on Sep 7, 2007 at 07:15 AM | #

By the way, if a similar contest is held next year, here’s an idea: Instead of having one winner get mule service for up to five games, how about five winners each getting one game shipped from the con? It would reduce the luck and the rich-get-richer problem. Posted by Eric Clark on Sep 13, 2007 at 12:34 AM | #

Eric Clark suggested: Instead of having one winner get mule service for up to five games, how about five winners each getting one game shipped from the con? The problem is that I would then be packaging five games individually instead of five games in one box, and I’d need to make sure I have enough boxes, packaging material, and so on. I want to spend as much of my time covering the event as possible, thus my limited offer of generosity. Think of the offer as an experiment, though, and if it goes well, you can expect to see it reappear in some fashion next year. Posted by W. Eric Martin on Sep 13, 2007 at 08:45 AM | #

Any word on a winner for the Caylus contest? Posted by Patrick Barringer on Oct 1, 2007 at 02:56 PM | #
|
|
The announcement of the Caylus winner will have to wait a few weeks. The answer checking is taking far more time than I thought it would, especially since multiple entries have minor errors, such as possibly forgetting that turn order alternates in a two-player game, which means I need to figure out what’s really going in in the answer. I’ll make another announcement about the contest in a couple of days. As for the Mule contest, Michael Green is the randomly chosen winner. Congrats, Michael! Posted by W. Eric Martin on Oct 2, 2007 at 02:52 PM | #
|

Thanks for the reply. Did several people tie, or were several of the top scores invalid? I thought you were only going to check the winning score to see if it was valid then the next if it wasn’t and so on. Posted by Patrick Barringer on Oct 2, 2007 at 03:00 PM | #
|
|
Patrick, I need more time to check the answers than I have at the present moment, thus the delay. I need to decide whether any error kicks out an answer or whether I should be lenient in something like Player 2 entering the castle before Player 1, when it could be the other way around. The game won’t be available until the end of the month in any case, so I’ll announce the winner sometime before then once I have time to check out the details. Posted by W. Eric Martin on Oct 2, 2007 at 03:15 PM | #

It’s all good. Thanks for doing the contest =). Posted by Patrick Barringer on Oct 2, 2007 at 03:19 PM | #

since i’m one of the participants, i have a suggestion, if the minor error is a typo or if it affects the scoring in a minor way, it can be accepted.

I would concur with that, except that leaves the position of deciding what’s a minor scoring error. This whole contest is about scoring so even a minor error could negatively effect the outcome. Posted by Patrick Barringer on Oct 2, 2007 at 06:53 PM | #
|

aahhh… if the error causes the scores to dip below scores posted by others, i suppose. Posted by Heng Aik Yong on Oct 3, 2007 at 06:23 AM | #
