Valerie Putman: Essen Try Then Buy List

This will be a short entry--I am still at Essen and I only have internet access for 10 minutes.  Here’s the list of games that I had a chance to try and I liked it enough to buy it after the demo.

Robot Master This small Knizia game has clever scoring--what a surprise!

Ruby Gloom Ok, this small card game based on a Canadian cartoon was awful.  But I’m a big fan of the cartoon (I did Ruby Gloom cosplay at Dragon*
Con), so this was a buy anyway.

Krakaw 1325 I generally am wary of partnership games with a single winner, but this was good enough to bring home.

Royal Palace This was my favorite new to me game of the week.

There were many games that I bought without playing or played without buying.  More on that next week!

Back to gaming,
Valerie Putman

This is the third person I’ve seen mention Palais Royal and they’ve all been enthusiastic.  I knew next to nothing about this title at the beginning of the fair, but it’s now become a must try for me.

As I noted in my brief write-up, Royal Palace has everything that you’d expect in a good Hans im Glück design. The short description: Place dudes on the board, then move them around in ways to get resources and money, which is then transformed into points. Sound intriguing enough? Did I suck all the fun out of the game with that description?

So, Eric, would you say it’s more like Monopoly or Risk?

Well, Eric, Melissa has already compared the game to Louis XIV.  Your description also precisely matches Louis, except that you don’t even get to move the dudes around in that game!  I loves me some Louis, so no, you didn’t suck the fun out of Palais with that blurb.  But nice try!  :-)
