Valerie Putman:  Prose on Cons—Buckeye Game Fest, 2008

Next weekend my game club, the Columbus Area Boardgaming Society (CABS) is holding its annual game convention, the Buckeye Game Fest.  It starts Thursday, October 2nd at noon and runs until Sunday, October 5th at 5 pm.  It is held at the Ramada Columbus North, just inside the top of the 270 loop.  I think you should go.  Why?

Free Games You thought that the Rio Grande Games were all given away at Origins?  Think again!  The first 150 attendees at Buckeye Game Fest get a free RGG game.  It will be first come, first choice—so get there early!

Tournaments Many CABS members come from a WBC/Prezcon/Euroquest background, so Buckeye Game Fest has an impressive schedule of planned games and tournaments with excellent GMs to keep things running smoothly.  A few highlights include:

Race for the Galaxy (6 pm, Thursday)
Diplomacy Tournament (first round, 6 pm Thursday)
Agricola (4 pm, Friday)
Tichu Tournament (8 pm, Friday)
18XX Tournament (throughout the weekend, best 3 scores wins)

Open Gaming The entire CABS library will be brought to the convention hotel for your gaming pleasure!  There will also be plenty of table space available for open gaming.

Auction As usual, there will be an auction Saturday morning.  I usually sell a dozen games (and spend it all on a few new games to bring home).  Unfortunately I have to miss the Saturday of BGF this year for a wedding.

It’s cheaper than a game Registration at the door is $35.  If you also buy your CABS 2009 membership (normally $20), it’s $49 for CABS membership and BGF registration.

Great deals RC Hobbies will be selling all the newest and hottest games at amazing discounts.  With no shipping and handling charges, this is usually better than any deal I can find at the internet retailers.

You never know! Last year I had the unexpected opportunity to play a copy of Wabash Cannonball before it was available at Essen.  You never know what games might be available to play as prototypes or early releases.

I’ll be there!  (OK, that one isn’t worthy of the big bold font, but still…come say hi!)
Enthusiastically snoopy dancing no matter what the critics say…

I’d rather be gaming,
Valerie Putman

Hi Valerie,

I won’t make Buckeye Game Fest (I’ll be at Beyond Monopoly! in York this Saturday) but I’m looking forward to snoopy dancing with you at OMGESSEN!

...and last year we had 1960 available before its release, too!  (Thanks, Zev!) Indeed, you never know!

Any games that might be out that I could go begging for? I think I’ve got Dominion covered. :-)

At BGF there’s also these things called wargames. I’m sure you’ll see soem multiplayer stuff ranging form Napoleonic Wars to Friedrich to Pacific Typhoon. I’m sure there will be some 2 player games, especially if Tyler’s around. BTW the desginer of Conflict of Heroes is scheduled to run demos on Saturday. A couple of other small companies were making noises about showing, but nothing definite.

Hi Everyone,

I plan on making my homecoming to Board Gaming and will arrive this Friday.  I have two bits of news.

First, and most importantly, I will have three different prototypes from designer Emanuele Ornella that I am looking for playtesters for.  I will be available to teach these games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and will gladly play them as well!  Please send me a geekmail (BGG u/n: Punkzter) if you want to setup a time to play.

Second, if anyone is interested in playing any of the Martin Wallace games in my collection please send me a geekmail as well.  I would be particularly interested in playing Struggle of Empires (as I have actually yet to play a full game myself).

See you Friday!

~Brad
