Valerie Putman: Snowed in at Ubercon VII
Ok, I said I liked Snowball games--I wasn’t asking for a blizzard! I am writing this post from the LAN gaming area at UberCon VII in New Jersey. I intended to write my post from my parents house last night, but the snow made the drive to my parents house impossible. So I was stuck at the con enjoying another evening of games--rough life! My flight home today was cancelled and many of us are snowed in here--so UberCon will continue for at least another night! This will just be a quick post to give you a report of my convention experience so far.
I was delighted to start the convention with Alan Ernstein’s new game for Hangman games, Crystal Faire. It will be available April 1st. During the game players trade gems to create more valuable sets. There are marvelous bluffing opportunities and many difficult decisions to be made, including deciding when to claim money for your gems (and whether or not to share). I look forward to playing this again. Alan and I were both soundly beaten by fellow Ubercon attendee, Liz, and yet we all felt we had a chance for the win right through the last turn.
I’ve also enjoyed some old favorites this weekend including Age of Steam, Tahuantinsuyu, and Puerto Rico. Wins from these games have earned me a few tickets that I can turn in for convention prizes. For example, 4 tickets will buy me a PC copy of Puerto Rico. In general, the convention has been really well run with free drinks, lots of organized eurogames, plenty of open gaming, and over 500 friendly gamers to play with.
I’ll update this report with more details later. But as long as I am going to be snowed in here another day--I might as well go play some more games!
Live from Ubercon,
Valerie Putman

It was a lot of fun to see you again Valerie! Age of Steam was as good a game as I expected and I think I will prefer it to Railroad Tycoon due to the size of the map, etc. As for Tahuantinsuyu, I think it was great to have Alan to give us all some good advice. I certainly think I have a much better grip of the game’s complexity and strategy than I would have from playing it only once. And as for the PC version of Puerto Rico, Shu and I managed to win/"Acquire" 4 tickets to get a copy from the prize table and I am about to install it on a computer. I gotta make sure to keep the resolution issues at bay! Seeing how getting snowed in at a game convention can be very much fun, I will make sure to drive in next time to get snowed in with the rest of the crowd! Stupid train was still running Saturday night, so we made it home nice and easy. Can’t wait for your full report of the rest of your adventures! - Blue Posted by Cemile Guldal on Feb 13, 2006 at 11:42 AM | #
