Valley Games Talks About Its Ambitious Future
Valley Games has announced a lengthy list of releases for the next twelve months: a half-dozen new editions of highly desirable out-of-print games (Hannibal: Rome vs. Carthage, Titan, Big City, Republic of Rome, Liberté, and Extrablatt) along with three all new titles (Containers, Municipium, and SuperNova). Can Valley Games, with only one release to date, pull off this schedule?
“It’s true, we’ve announced a large and impressive basket of games, but thus far delivered on only one (not counting the Command & Colors dice, but that’s not a standalone game),” says Kevin Nesbitt. “I believe that Valley Games can deliver on our promises. So far we’ve approached each game signing with the same attitude: the seemingly impossible can be accomplished.”
Nesbitt goes on to say, “People may wonder how we’ve managed to sign such big games, and I think it is because we are so new to the industry that we haven’t yet resigned ourselves to believing the people that say ‘It can’t be done.’ We just find games that deserve to be in print and go get them, whatever that might entail. This highly successful batch of signings in a very short period of time is partly a result of our eagerness to pursue such big projects, and partly our need to establish Valley Games as a publisher that listens to customer demands and responds to them.”
As for the question of how long it will take for these games to appear, Nesbitt says, “Rik, Torben, and I are all gamers first, and publishers second. We would all be disappointed on a personal level as well as a professional level if any of our projects fell through. This gives us, in my opinion, extra motivation to ensure that the games we announce are not only produced, but produced with the highest quality we can impart to them.”
“All of our games are given a projected release date that we feel is obtainable. Certainly there may be some that slip for various reasons, but we intend to keep the gaming community as informed as possible through sites like BoardgameNews.com. After all, our preorder customers play a big part in deciding just what gets published and how quickly that occurs. It is in our best interest to make sure that our customers are well informed about the events and dates surrounding the game that they help to bring into print.”
Preorders for some, if not all, of the announced titles will open before the end of May 2007. Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage is scheduled to ship in June or July. That title will give all of us a better idea of how to judge future game releases from Valley…

I am glad to see Valley Games is attempting to address the question many have begun to ask: can they really publish all of these games they have announced? A track record of one game published (which they have had to dump a lot of on Tanga) does not establish that the company will have the resources to pull off their ambitious schedule. Each time I hear of another game announced for reprinting by Valley Games, I think: please publish what you have already announced before starting more projects. I (and many others) are excited to see these games back in print and wish Valley Games well. Posted by Greg Jones on May 8, 2007 at 04:09 PM | #
