Victory Point Games Combines Publishing and Teaching

While I’ve seen descriptions for a number of college courses in the U.S. relating to game design, almost all of them focus on video games and not the cardboard variety. Victory Point Games, on the other hand, is a desktop publishing venture that arose out of classes on game design, prototyping and project management taught by Alan Emrich at The Art Institute of California: Orange County.

While Emrich initially thought the VPG could provide students with a published title of their own design that they could present to prospctive employers, he’s since expanded his vision to include established designers in the company’s product line. Through the release of more than twenty designs in its first year, many of which are introductory wargame designs, VPG has provided the student interns with hands-on lessons in design, development, playtesting and publication – an interesting and useful approach for those who want to learn the industry first-hand without a huge capital investment. Best of luck to you and your students, Mr. Emrich!
