Weekend Project - San Marco Quilt
At the Gathering of Friends each April, the prize table contains mounds of treasured and desirable games—but the most special items of all are those one-of-a-kind beauties that you’d never expect to see. Jesse McGatha, for example, took the online board of Ticket to Ride: Switzerland and had it printed on canvas and mounted on a frame. Craig Massey’s mom went Jesse one better by stitching up a quilt that resembles the San Marco gameboard. Craig has sent BGN pictures of the quilt, but no instructions were provided, so you’ll have to figure out the pattern on your own.

For those out there who find their gaming interests intersecting with quilting, here is a bit more info on the project. Please bear in mind that I know next to nothing about quilting. My mother and grandmother are the experts. Anyway, this project was done using applique (I think I’ve spelled that right) for the major pieces. There is some type of backing used to make the piece a bit stiffer since it is intended to function as a wall hanging. There is actually a small sleeve at the top of the board on the back for a dowel to hang it. Most of the fabrics for the main sections of the board are a batik print which matched the style of the original game quite well. If anyone is interested in more detail, let me know and I’ll see if I can pass some along. Now I need to see if I can get my mother to make another one for my game room - Tom you’ll have to get in line. Also, my mother has done a quilted wall hanging of a Settlers board. I’d be happy to send pictures those pictures along to Eric as well if people wanted to see them. Posted by Craig Massey on May 5, 2007 at 06:32 PM | #

Thanks Craig, It looks great. Quilters have the same problem we have. There is always that next pattern to buy and of course all quilters have a huge fabric stash of material. My wife has a walk-in closet just filled with drawers of fabric sorted by colors. Pass on a big way to go to your Mom and Grandmother. Posted by William Anderson on May 5, 2007 at 08:58 PM | #
