Wizards of the Coast Launches a New Gaming Portal: Gleemax.com

Wizards of the Coast has launched Gleemax.com, which it bills as “an online strategy gaming destination.” In the first post on Gleemax, WotC Vice President of Digital Games Randy Buehler writes, “It’s a massive expansion of our web presence, designed to give gamers a place online where they can hang out, play games, and most importantly, find other gamers. We see this as a natural extension of things that Wizards has stood for since the early 90’s...”

While the site will contain tools designed for players of WotC titles, such as ways to show off your D&D character, Buehler says that Gleemax is intended for fans of all strategy games, but digital gaming in particular.

Gleemax will have an online game section with various Avalon Hill titles, including Vegas Showdown. The company will also have space for retailers to post information about events, and gamers within the vicinity of those stores will be able to receive those announcements automatically.

For more details on Gleemax, read this article on ICv2 and the three subsequent interviews with Randy Buehler.

My initial response? Neon green lettering on a blackish-brown background is an awful choice. After five minutes on the site, my eyes started aching. The company claims it’s aiming for 15-year-olds, and the site design backs up this claim as only youngsters would appreciate this look.

Ouch.  I share your opinions on the site design.  If they want it to be an online hangout for gamers, they need a friendlier layout that’s easy on the eyes.  There’s a reason the green screen CRTs are all but extinct.

It took me several minutes of looking to figure out what the site was about.  I finally found this page:  http://www.gleemax.com/articles/announcement001.html which describes the idea.  However, the article is more a “this is what we plan to do”, rather than a “here’s what you can do on this site today”.  After clicking around, all I found was a basic forum, and some sort of submit-a-picture contest.  The WotC blogs were nowhere to be found.  I found no real game content.  And I didn’t really see any user-created content, either.

Why roll the site out before any of these features are ready?

Maybe I’m just cranky today, but that seems like one of the most unfriendly, feature-lacking community site I’ve ever seen.  And it’s ugly, too.

Jeff, you aren’t being cranky.  I’m sorry I wasted two minutes trying to figure out what they are doing there.  Oh well, someone wake me when they *actually* roll out the site.
