Xtra Innings, Coming in 2009

Xtra Innings is a new baseball game that’s due to be released late in Q1 2009, just prior to the opening of the 2009 baseball season in the U.S. “It duplicates almost exactly the playing of a game of baseball,” says co-designer Dwight Baird. “This is not a game of luck - there are no dice. It is a game of pure strategy and is based on the players’ knowledge of the game. Players must choose every pitch and every ensuing play, depending on whether the pitch is a ball, strike or a hit.”

Xtra Innings is for two players with a playing time of roughly 90 minutes. The game retail in the neighborhood of $30. Says Baird, “The suggested age is 12 years and up, but the game contains a special ‘Little League Edition’ for younger and more novice players.”

If there are no random elements, then it’s not really baseball. Baseball is full of them, and that is not a bad thing. If it were deterministic, the game would have little point.

I don’t know, Paul; AH’s Football Strategy and Baseball Strategy had no random elements and they were extremely popular.

I guess I’d answer this the same way I respond to wargamers who insist on the necessity of having dice in a wargame.  If you want a simulation, the random elements need to be there.  But if you want a GAME, in this case one based on baseball, then maybe we can do better.

By the way, I was never a big fan of the AH “Strategy” games, as it seemed they just replaced dice rolling with advanced Rock-Paper-Scissors, which isn’t of much greater interest to me.  But I disagree that the approach is somehow flawed and I’m curious to see how it’s implemented in this new game.
