Zooloretto XXL, Coming at Spiel 08
Michael Schacht and Abacusspiele will expand the Zooloretto empire in new directions at Spiel 08 with the release of Zooloretto XXL.
The central twist in the game play comes from a set of tiles representing other zoos valued at 4-6 points and additional coin, vending, animal and offspring tiles and tokens, all of which have a blue back to allow for easier separation of the bits at game’s end. You mix these tiles with those from the basic Zooloretto game and play the game as normal. When you have a full enclosure, you can take an action not available in the basic game, namely shipping all of the animals from that enclosure to another zoo for display there. Those animals are removed from the game, giving you room to grow again, and you take the topmost zoo tile from the stack, with the value of the tiles decreasing as the game goes on.

Zooloretto XXL also includes two trucks with only one and two holding pens for use in the two-player game and an expansion board and 22 new tiles for use in Aquaretto. Rules for Zooloretto XXL, which will sell for €18, are available on the Abacusspiele website. Rio Grande Games will distribute this release.
Schacht notes that the Abacus booth (#10-40) at Spiel 08 will once again have a small giveaway item while supplies last. A PC version of Zooloretto from SpinBottle Games will also be available soon, and the Abacus booth will have a discount coupon for the game.

So is XXL the original Zooloretto game plus some additional tiles, or is this just more expansion tiles and you add it to your original game? I’m obviously confused by the wording here… :) Posted by Diane Close on Oct 9, 2008 at 04:33 PM | #

It’s an expansion - if you look at the full-size picture, you can see the “Erweiterung. Nur spielbar mit Zooloretto” on the cover. Posted by Dan Blum on Oct 9, 2008 at 05:02 PM | #

This game has a fun theme, and I don’t want to hand out the haterade, but I just felt like my actions didn’t mean much. It was like watching a movie of a gamer being played. Same thing with Blue Moon City. Is it me? Did I fail to see the subtle genius in these titles? Posted by Mark Crane on Oct 10, 2008 at 12:08 AM | #

Mark Crane, try Coloretto. It helps you get an idea of how your actions do impact other players and yourself. I personally like Coloretto better because it plays faster and doesn’t have all these weird elements that were added to fit a theme. http://www.marquand.net/staticpages/index.php?page=coloretto_play You can play it there with some AIs to get a feel for the game. > the Abacus booth (#10-40) at Spiel 08 will once
Will that giveaway make its way to the US through Rio Grande (or Spielbox) in the future, like the polar bear eventually did? Posted by Diane Close on Oct 11, 2008 at 09:32 AM | #

Diane, I would imagine that if Schacht keeps making small add-ons or variants for Zooloretto and Rio Grande keeps having interest in the game, then Jay will package those items together as he did in 2007 with five small expansions. That expansion set has a $10 retail, and Rio Grande probably wants a minimum MSRP along those lines to make the production and distribution effort worth its time. Note that this is all speculation on my part… Eric Posted by W. Eric Martin on Oct 11, 2008 at 09:38 AM | #
