Convention Report: Essen 2006: Stories

A lot of the fun of game conventions like Essen is meeting people and chatting. Often the chatting leads to stories of silly situations that have happened to people at or during the fair. Normally these stories are told and then forgotten - I have often thought that was a pity as others didn’t get a chance to hear them. This time I decided to ask some people to go on the record and write down their stories so others can hear some of the silly things that happened during the fair.
As they say in Law and Order… here are their stories (and I added one of my own).

Convention Report: Essen 2006: Postscript 1

Convention Report: Essen 2006: October 21, 2006 (Day 3)

This is my report from day three of the Essen 2006 - Saturday, October 21st.
Before I get started, I need to correct two things from yesterday’s report. Firstly, I mentioned that the board for 24/7 is wood. It actually isn’t - though it looks like it! Sunriver is giving away special editions of the game with a wooden board, but the regular edition isn’t wood. Secondly, in a photo caption I had mistakenly identified designer KC Humphrey as JC Lawrence. A funny mistake - there are two people in the game world that I know by their initials and I got them mixed up. Apologies for the errors - I have corrected them.
Now, onto the report!

Convention Report: Essen 2006: October 18, 2006 - Part 1 (Setup Day)

This is part one of my report from the Essen game fair for Wednesday, October 18th. Today is the last day for the exhibitors to set up - the fair officially starts tomorrow.
First things first - I as able to fix my camera! I manhandled the lens and was able to unjam it - now it’s as good as new. Whew!
My first duty of the day, after posting yesterday’s report, was to head to the convention center for the press conference. All of the press people are invited to an auditorium where a number of speeches are given. The speeches are of little interest to me, but there are also a couple of rooms that are set aside where the publishers can display all their new games. There are usually representatives from the publishers on hand to answer questions about the games and often the designers are present as well. It’s quite a mob scene - the room is too small and there are too many people - but it’s a golden opportunity to see all the new games in one place. I took the opportunity to get pictures of many new games (see the pictures below).

Convention Report: Essen 2006: October 17, 2006 (Setup Day)

Here’s my report from the Essen game fair for Tuesday, October 17th. In previous years the Tuesday before the fair starts has been a bit of quiet day - I’d head the to the convention center to check out what was going on, but there really wasn’t that much to see or do. This year, though, things were quite different. Not only I ran into quite a few familiar faces, I actually got to play a few new games!

Convention Report: Essen 2006: October 15 / 16, 2006 (Travel Day)

It time for another trip and yet another convention report! This time I’m off to Essen, the mother of all game conventions, which takes place from October 19 - 22, 2006 (Thursday to Sunday) in Essen, Germany. I usually try to travel to Germany a couple of days in advance of the show to get acclimatized before the show starts and this year was no exception. On Sunday, October 15th, I gathered up a couple of big empty suitcases, packed them with the minimum amount of clothing possible (you must save the maximum room for games to bring back) and headed to the airport.
