Gone Cardboard: Some Details on Dominion: Stash

In honor of Dominion winning the 2009 Spiel des Jahres (SdJ) – Germany’s Game of the Year award – designer Donald X. Vaccarino and publishers Hans im Glück, Rio Grande Games and Lautapelit will release a special promo card featuring the SdJ logo on the card back. While normally the backs of all cards in a game are identical so that players can’t spot which card is where in the deck, the special power of “Stash” calls for something different:

Not print ready version of Stash

As Dale Yu mentions in his Feb. 10 column, being able to place “Stash” where you want in your deck can be both good and bad. Play with lots of “Wishing Wells,” for example, and you’ll have a good chance of “guessing” which card lies on top of the deck; use the “Chancellor” and you might want to stash lots of Stash on top of your deck in order to buy Victory cards, then flip the deck and set up for the next purchase. “Thief” and “Pirate Ship” can work against you, of course, and who knows what else awaits in upcoming expansions? (Besides Vaccarino, the publishers, various playtesters, etc.)

In addition to bearing the SdJ logo on its reverse, “Stash” has a subtler Easter egg on its obverse. Check out the artwork from Martin Hoffmann after the jump:

Still not sure what’s hiding within the image? Visit this page for a major clue.

As for when “Stash” might become available, Jay Tummelson of Rio Grande Games said that he expects the cards to arrive in the U.S. before the end of February 2010, and he’s still determining how best to distribute them.

Tee hee! That’s really good artwork--I was able to recognize them even though the drawings are so faint!
