Nominees for the 35th Annual Origins Awards
Anthony Gallela, chair of the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design (AAGAD), has released a list of the nominees for the 35th Annual Origins Awards. The nomination and award process works as follows: First, publishers and designers submit their creations to a jury composed of members of AAGAD and the Game Manufacturer’s Association (GAMA), and the jury selects ten items in the various categories. Retailers who attend GAMA’s annual trade show then narrow the list down to five nominees, with the winner being determined by those who attend the Origins Game Fair, which takes place June 24-28 in Columbus, Ohio in 2009. The nominees for 2009 are:

Don’t be surprised when Monty Python Fluxx beats Dominion. Looney Labs has always been effective at mobilizing the vote on the show floor. Posted by Rob Cannon on Apr 25, 2009 at 06:27 PM | #

Also, does this vote mean anything without any FFG games there? I guess they don’t play the Origins Award, but their games would be natural vote getters with the Origin attendees. The battle between Agricola and Pandemic should be interesting. Agricola would probably win with BGG voters, but Origins attendees might prefer Pandemic. Living Labyrinth is horrid - not sure why it would ever be a contender for an award. Its not often that I down a game like this but it wasn’t even fun to play. But more importantly, The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen? when did this come out!? Sliding over to BGG now… Posted by tom moughan on Apr 26, 2009 at 06:50 AM | #

Dominion, Monty Python Fluxx, and Trailer Park Wars all chosen in the card game category? That’s like having a male beauty contest with Brad Pitt, Danny DeVito, and Jason Alexander as the finalists. Posted by Jonathan Degann on Apr 28, 2009 at 02:40 PM | #

Is just me that thinks that the category “Children’s, Family, and Party Games” should be spit up. It’s not really useful to any of those to bundle them together and on what basis does one compare say Tier auf Tier with Wits and Wagers? Posted by Fraser McHarg on May 4, 2009 at 10:37 PM | #

Even just the list of finalists is embarassing to my mind. It would be nice to see an award thats been around as long as Origins actually mean something. Peace Posted by Brent Lloyd on May 5, 2009 at 04:16 PM | #

Origins awards are a joke and have long been just that. Nice sticker, but most bumper stickers have more meaning. If attendees decide what games win, that’s fine. But how in the world do some of the worst games get NOMINATED? Anybody play Conquest of Pangea? Yeah… I just threw up a little, too. Play the games before you nominate them, people.
